Matt Nathanson

Wedding Dress

So we lie here in the dark
All the wrong things on fire
In sickness and in health
To be with you, just to be with you

In your wedding dress
To have and to hold
'Cause even at my best
I wanna let go

And you hold me in your arms
And all that I can see
Is my future in your hands
And all that I can feel
Is how long ever after is
It's all that I can do
To be with you, just to be with you

In your wedding dress
To have and to hold
'Cause even at my best
I wanna let go

Thought I'd lost you
Thought I'd lost you
I gave you away
Thought I'd lost you
I'm jealous of the moon
For how it moves the waves

'Cause in your wedding dress
To have and to hold
'Cause even at my best
I wanna let go

And I wanna be somebody else now
And I wanna thicken my skin
And I wanna wish it all
Just wish it all away again

another opinion | Reviewer: krystal | 3/22/10

I believe everyones interpretations on this song. Its beautiful, but in a wedding I wouldn't use it because like others have said before, everyone interprets it different and I think that was matts intentions. My take is, when someone is in their wedding dress, they're PERFECt, and everything should be perfect.but he keeps running away from everything. The jealousy of the moon could mean- he's jealous that the moon is in control and he's not. He wants to be someone else, but he wants to thicken his skin. One moment he wants to be someone else, and the next minute he's telling himself he needs to stick thru it all. All and all I think its a struggle he's going thru. The wedding, or wedding dress, symbolizes perfection. And forever is his battle. Loves!

positive view | Reviewer: Jasmine | 12/1/09

So, I'm writing a book called "Quinn", I've been looking for songs to help inspire me for a certain scene.. The scene is that the title character, Quinn Grayson is 19 years old and she is married to a man who she's loved for eight years... and she is going to die from Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia... so when I heard this song, I chose to put myself in the shoes of Frankie, Quinn's husband and see how he felt.. so my interpretation, from Frankie's point of view is: while lying with her on her deathbed, he just wants to go back to the night they got married to try and remember how he thought they would last forever and he never thought forever could end so soon... and also it kind of digs into the loss that he's not prepared to suffer because he still just wants to hold her in her wedding dress when he was so naive to think that forever was a long long time.. does that make any sense at all..???

DEF not a wedding song cause he said so !! | Reviewer: Ashley S | 10/16/09

Matt Nathanson was at Longwood University for their Oktober Fest on October 3rd & he performed this song & said, "this is a song about weddings, but not bubbly weddings. & yes, this is also about ice cream." he explained earlier in the show that "ice cream" was sex. so this song is about sex & not wanting to commit obviously. straight from the horses mouth!!! =) still love this song though!!! his voice is amazing!

Music is as much about the listener as the composer | Reviewer: Adam | 7/18/09

Music is art.. art is interpretive. Each and every person has a different response to it. Like most things it will probably depend on how you feel at that time in your life. Feel free to have it be sad or happy for you.. and how it affects others doesn't diminish what it speaks to you.

So sit back.. relax.. enjoy the song.. and feel not the desire to tell others they are wrong about their perspective.. We have plenty that in the world... and it does us no good.

The correct lyrics clarify... | Reviewer: Erobs | 7/1/09

The correct lyrics are "I'm jealous of the moon, for how it moves away." This makes it pretty clear that the man in this song is absolutely 100% regretful about getting married. It's interesting to see people put a positive spin on this song and think it should be used at a wedding... I'm getting married in two months and this would totally send the wrong message to everyone if it was our first dance! I think Christie's analysis is quite a stretch, to say the least.

not, not a wedding song | Reviewer: anonymous | 6/19/09

Just heard Matt Nathanson play this at Summerstage on Tuesday night. He introduced it by saying that people think it is a wedding song, but it's not, NOT a wedding song. He said - sort of laughing - please, please do not play this at your wedding. Did not elaborate further on the meaning of the lyrics, but hey, that was straight from him.

First impression | Reviewer: hinker | 5/25/09

Whoa, reading your guys' imput really changed how I saw this song. the first time I heard it I got the impression that the guy loved someone who got married and he could never have her. "all the wrong things on fire" because being with her was forbidden because she was married to someone else. "I'm jealous" because he can't have her, "future in your hands, and all that I can think is how long ever after is" because she's not his.
I think you are more right than I in that the song is about uncertainty in the future and such.

Lovely | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/15/09

it is def a wedding song but it is about the doudts the guy has. he is only human and to be fair marriage is scary and even at his best he is not sure he would be able to give her what she wants and needs, what if he failed thats wht he wants to let her go, not because he does not love her but because he might not be able to meet all her expectations, and imagine they are both stil virgins lying in the dark scared of what is to come in their lives and all other aspects of their lives. he is completely honest when he thus admits how scared he is and in admitting his own fear he shows just how much he realt loves her.

i disagree | Reviewer: jennifer | 5/14/09

I would never want this to be my wedding song because it leaves too much doubt as to how you're supposed to feel on your wedding day because there will be people that will have a totally different out-take on this song. Yes i do agree a very beautifully written song but i personally believe it's mostly about a break up forsure and how "at someones best they wanna let the other person go" they wanna be clear headed and make the right decision so at the highest point where there is no doubting emotions thats when they are positive they want to let go....and lol i gave you away, how else to interprit that?

Both Sides | Reviewer: Christy | 5/11/09

I respectively disagree with Josh H. for the simple fact that the song could, in fact, be positively interpreted. For instance, the line stating, "All the wrong things on fire" could symbolize the fact that as the couple lays in the dark, they are worrying about things that are unimportant. This could be anything from feeling too young, worrying about how the ceremony will go, etc. "Even at my best, I wanna let go" could stand for letting go of all responsibilities and worries and finding himself lost in love with his bride. When he says "Thought I'd lost you, I gave you away" could refer to a mistake the groom had made in the past by ending their relationship only to realize he made a huge mistake and she took him back. Likewise, saying he is jealous of how the moon moves the waves could represent the fact that the moon moves the waves every single night, and thinking back to his past mistake of abandoning her, he feels terrible. Saying that he wants to be somebody else and wants to thicken his skin could simply mean that he wishes to be somebody less nervous/anxious about the wedding. "Just wish it all away again" could mean he wants to wish away his doubts. Thus, I feel this song could most definitely be used as a wedding song. It all depends on how one interprets it.
