Violet Hill

Dĺžka piesne: 03:42

It was a long and dark December
From the rooftops I remember
There was snow, white snow

Clearly I remember
From the windows they were watching
While we froze down below

When the future's architectured
By a carnival of idiots on show
You'd better lie low

If you love me, won't you let me know?

Was a long and dark December
When the banks became cathedrals
And a fox became God

Priests clutched onto bibles
Hollowed out to fit their rifles
And a cross held aloft
Bury me in armour
When I'm dead and hit the ground
A love back home, it unfolds
And if you love me, won't you let me know?

I don't want to be a soldier
Who the captain of some sinking ship
Would stow, far below.
So if you love me, why d'you let me go?

I took my love down to violet hill
There we sat in snow
All that time she was silent still
Said if you love me, won't you let me know?
If you love me, won't you let me know?

Listen children... | Reviewer: KylieKerosene | 12/21/11

First of all, I know there's been some debate as to what this song is about. Some say it's the French Revolution, some say it's modern government. Well, I say it's BOTH. Who says you can't write a song about more than one thing? Especially when there are similarities between the two things...

Also, I love Coldplay's other music and how melodic and magical is can be, but this song is different. It has that edge that pricks at you and makes you feel just a little strange. And that's a good thing. This song is amazing.

By the way, I love how someone listed themselves as Anonymous, and then gave their email. Good one ;)

Very Nice Song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/10/11

Some cowards think that if a Great band like Coldplay sings a song like this one -which tells the truth- that means bein' "angry" or "disappointed" or unexpectedly "different"! Yeah, that's what they believe. it's because that these kind of people or made of things that they say, anger & disappointment. Cause they can not face the Truth. So they try to pretend to be too happy & too fly to listen to this kind of songs or in better words, Facing the Truth. u better noe it cowards: u can't architecture Coldplay's Way and Future.
I Luv Coldplay's both Love songs & Truth-telling songs.
I LOVE YOU COLDPLAY, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. :D

meaning. | Reviewer: Jonnie Rose | 5/24/09

The whole point of this song-from my opinion. is that our political "leaders" are planning our future for us and we are simply obeying them forgetting about what really matters to us.
That we are like puppets building a world that is no longer ours. It is the world of our leaders.

"I don't want to be a soldier when the captain of some sinking ship would stow, far below So if you love me Why'd you let me go"

This is verse is telling us a point of view from a soldier who's captain is giving him a command to die. So the soldier is saying if you love us your people why would you let me die?

"When the future is architectured by a carnival of idiots on a show"
I think that the verse is saying that our future is being planned by us-who are following orders from bosses who we dont even like.
and
"When the banks became cathedrals and the fox became god"
We are worshipping our leaders that they are becoming our gods. and they are comparing banks to cathedrals trying to say that our place of refuge is our money.

difference is in the difference | Reviewer: ronnie | 4/17/09

Got to b 1 of my fav colplay songs... wat actually pleased me the 1st time i heard the song was the sound.. it sounds so very diffrent frm the previous coldplay songs... like chris martin has opened up his voice 4 the 1st time in his life.. never mind the lyrics.. its the same case as it was wen i'd heard rush of blood or clocks.. m still tryin to get to the core of it. doesnt matter much though..

i just dont know | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/6/09

i am of course a coldplay's fan forever and ever.but the first time i listen to this song,,, it's just...feel strange... i was a little bit disapointed, but i try to be patient and listened more and more.and now, i think the song is so unique in its own way.it is just different.they are just different than their previous songs and albums, which is for me so bold and brave. for them out there who thinks this song is not good or you are dissapointed by it, please listen to it again.i respect coldplay because they are just being themselves.they're not afraid to deliver something different. c'mon..they've grown up..so, their songs must grow up too.they cant make the same songs they'd made when they first started okay... and still, i really, really, really, really love the video and the music.it's just the lyric.i quite dont get what they meant at all...
whatever it is, coldplay forever!!!1

The song is about | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/4/09

The song is about the French Revolution just as Viva la Vida is. "Was a long and dark December
When the banks became cathedrals
And the FOX
Became God

Priests clutched onto bibles
hollowed out to fit their rifles
And the cross was held aloft"

The French National Assembly banned the Catholic Church because of their finacial troubles. Priest were beaheaded hence "Hollowed out to fit their rifles."

Plus if you listen too the CD, this is no gap between the music at the end of Viva la Vida and Violet Hill, the music is the same.

I love Coldplay | Reviewer: Jessica | 11/22/08

I love Colplay!! There are some bands who sing the same type of songs over and over again, but Coldplay doesn't. All of their songs are unique and have meaning to them...and the tunes are so pretty!! I must say, I can never get enough enjoyment out of Coldplay.

this grew on me | Reviewer: autumn | 8/4/08

the first time i heard this song, i thought "this sucks for coldplay." but now i just can't stop listening. even though it's a slightly different sound, the song has a beautiful feeling to it and is an amazing song. still not my #1 favorite coldplay song, but then again, isn't the old stuff always the best?

and you people are way too angry to be coldplay fans. and you're DEFINITELY too angry to be radiohead fans. chill.
also, you people are too angry.

I hung up the phone | Reviewer: Jess | 7/30/08

"Anonymous...cool guy...Mr(Or Ms)I blow Chris Martin in my dreams..." I never said the song was bad. If you listen to music like you read my "review", then I am not surprised that you wouldn't recognize actual music when you hear it. My view on life has nothing to do with the review I posted. There's nothing wrong with a little correct time/sociological time-lineage, via band comparison. Also, since I play music for a living, I'm sure I'd listen circles around you on any given day. So that makes ME the expert. Stop asking yourself questions too. That "shit's" me off. You sound so unsure of your wrongly pretentious, erroneous, short of the basket, crappy comments on my review. And I waste time, geez... at least my retort was somewhat thought out. Idiot. Listen to Kanye West some time and tell me how many songs AREN'T about him, then I can trust YOUR opinion.

Armour | Reviewer: Emelie | 7/15/08

as someone else before me said, I had thought the lyrics were "bury me in armour", and not honour, at the end of the second verse.
And following it, at the very end of the second verse, it does not quite sound like "a love back home unfolds". Maybe it's just me, but my friends have noticed it as well.

I tell myself it's armour because that is just so much more powerful, we are preparing for the battle over our soul that follows death.

Violet Hill has got to be one of my most favourite songs of this album.

Opinions are like assholes...
aaaaaaaaaaand you did nothing but state your unworthy opinion on a very good song. Now i'm no expert, but i thiiink they're doing a better job in the music industry than you are? Ok maybe you dont like the song, who cares? your opinion is like corn floating in my shit, completely worthless. They have obviously done something right to make it as big as they did? People like you shit me off, and you need to dig yourself a hole and die in it, because i don't see a reason for you to live any further. Kanye West has very good points in his songs, its called thinking about other people, instead of wasting time on a lyric website to talk about your pathetic, worthless and meaningless view on life.

bury me in armour | Reviewer: flo | 6/27/08

I think the lyrics are "bury me in ARMOUR" and not "HONOR", I'm French but speak English fluently and I am pretty sure Chris says "armour"... Furthermore it seems to be more logical semantically speaking and it complies with the motives he uses all along the song.

Opinions are like assholes... | Reviewer: Jess | 6/26/08

Chase. You're dumb, not to mention tasteless. Radiohead's greatest "musical" accomplishment would have to be OK Computer. Either way, Coldplay is just the poor man's Radiohead. They have decreased in style since Parachutes, when the whole world needed a replacement for Radiohead, because they couldn't get enough of the sound... That sound was OK Computer, not Kid A. Now, Chris Martin seems to act like the Kanye West of Brit-pop, shoving his opinions down the throats of the masses. Well you know what buddy, you named your kid Apple, I refuse to listen to your nonsense. I'm not saying the song sucks, but I think Bono has humanitarianism covered. Be a musician in a band, not a douche on a soapbox.
