WASN’T BORN TO FOLLOW
by Gerry Goffin / Carole King
No I’d rather go and journey
where the diamond crescents flowing
And run across the valley
Beneath the sacred mountain
And wander through the forest
Where the trees have leaves of prisms
That make the light up into colors
That no one know the names of
And when it’s time I’ll go and lay
Beside the legendary fountain
Till I see her form reflected
In its clear and gentle waters
And if you think I’m ready
You may lead me to the chasm
Where the rivers of our visions
Flow into one another
And I’ll stay awhile and wonder
At the mist that they created
And lose myself within it
Cleanse my mind and body
And I know at that moment
As I stand at cathedral
I will want to dive
Beneath the white cascading water
She may beg and she may plead
And she may argue with her logic
Mention all the things I’ll lose
That really have no value
Tho’ I doubt that she will ever
Come to understand my meaning
In the end she’ll surely know
I was not born to follow

One of my alltime favorite songs | Reviewer: Tony | 3/9/09
Of all the versions of this song, and there are many, for me the authoritative version is the Byrds' rendition, which appears (twice) in the movie Easy Rider. Even though Carole King and Gerry Goffin wrote it, and Carole King recorded it, I still think McGuinn's interpretation comes closest to expressing the sense of wonder and bittersweet beauty of those lyrics. To get a feel for how broadly the song has been interpreted, consider that it has been covered by, among others, Dusty Springfield, the Sadies, and the Gordons, each to wildly different effect.
Although I first heard Wasn't Born to Follow almost 40yrs ago, it still gives me butterflies every time I hear it. Not that many songs I can say *that* about.

I first heard this song when watching "Easy Rider". I subsequently listened to the soundtrack album and, was captivated by what I consider to be a pop masterpiece. While having appreciated the Byrds' former work, this new offering with its mix of pop, bluegrass and psychedelia took my appreciation to a higher level. My only criticism is that the song should have lasted at least a minute longer.
Great Song! | Reviewer: Becky | 8/17/05
First heard this song in "Easy Rider." Had no idea Carole King had written it. Great words--great music--great song!
