blackbird claw, raven wing
under the red sunlight
long clothesline, two shirt sleeves
waving as we go by
hundred years, hundred more
someday we may see a
woman king, wristwatch time
slowing as she goes to sleep
black horse fly, lemonade
jar on the red ant hill
garden worm, cigarette
ash on the window sill
hundred years, hundred more
someday we may see a
woman king, sword in hand
swing at some evil and bleed
black hoof mare, broken leg
eye on the shot gun shell
age old dog, hornet nest
built in the big church bell
hundred years, hundred more
someday we may see a
woman king, bloodshot eye
thumb down and starting to weep

The Imagery | Reviewer: The Analyst | 6/29/11
The imagery speaks here. This is about the suppressed woman. The clothes hanging on the line in the hot sun, a breeze flapping the sleeves of the shirt putting life into the lifeless. She is smoking as she watches the aunt hill that invades her garden. The lemon aid jar to draw them out, but she only draws flies. The horse, possibly a work horse, is broken and must be put down, the hornets nest, the old dog—all of these must be dealt with. The woman has a hard life with no help. They (Iron and Wine) drive by and witness this and in vision that one day she will overcome like so many women have done. One day there will be a woman king sword in hand and she’ll tackle what’s in front of her but bleed in the process. But not today. Even now after two hundred years, many women are still stifled. This woman’s thumbs are down on her life, and she weeps. We are still not there.
Defeating Evil | Reviewer: Emmanyman | 12/7/10
It says in the bible that men are to see woman as equal to them. I think the purpose of the song "woman king" is for a man to describe the gradually growing fire in the womans heart to destroy evil. At the end where she seems to be giving someone a death sentence with the "thumbs down", and can't seem to hold back the tear denoting to us the end of a long struggle, an arrival to kingship.

personal interpretation of course... the woman king is god. we are the hindered mare she is trying to decide whether or not to put down. the age old dog is dogma, the hornet nest the congregation housed by the church. someday we may see god put her thumb down and weep over her children. she does not lose the battle, we do

this is my favorite song ever. And i think you all know why, as many people said it before. I love the vocals in addition to all the points you all listed. Might actually be the one song i can listen to nonstop and never tire of. different scenes come into mind every time i listen to it, making it never get old.

Woman King is probably the best song on the EP. The rhythmic flow of the song coupled with the amazing imagery makes this arguably one of Iron and Wine's best.
Love it! | Reviewer: Keith | 1/30/07
Yea, I agree with the person below me (or above). It is a very good song, amazing music and meaningfully lyrics; a rare combination.
medieval dystopia | Reviewer: astapen | 12/16/05
A haunting, tribal beat with evocative lyrical imagery. Also, the idea of a woman king creates a world where women hold equal power with men, even though the woman king seems to lose her battle. I like it a lot.
