Irving Berlin

What’ll I Do?

Gone is the romance that was so divine.
'Tis broken and cannot be mended.
You must go your way,
And I must go mine.
But now that our love dreams have ended...

What'll I do
When you are far away
And I am blue
What'll I do?

What'll I do?
When I am wond'ring who
Is kissing you
What'll I do?

What'll I do with just a photograph
To tell my troubles to?

When I'm alone
With only dreams of you
That won't come true
What'll I do?

<instrumental-one verse>

What'll I do with just a photograph
To tell my troubles to?

When I'm alone
With only dreams of you
That won't come true
What'll I do?

My husband passed away in March. He took care of me and everything else. I didn't realize how much he did do. I'm so terribly lost without him. I do talk to his photograps I have throughout the house all the while wishing I could carress his face.

First heard this on Golden Girls also | Reviewer: Audrey | 12/20/11
This is a beautiful, haunting song that tugs at the heart for anyone suffering a loss. My mother died earlier this year and my dear kitty cat died a few weeks ago and I'm missing them both so much this Christmas. Hearing this song makes them feel a little closer to my heart.

I'm a 40 year old tough guy biker and this song makes me cry every single time. Guess I'm not as tough as I thought...lol. I first heard this song on the Golden Girls way back in the late 80's and I could never get it out of my memory...

I used to sing this song to my Mom after my Dad died in 1998. It was me telling her to hang on, hold up for me. She passed away 5/21/09. Now I sing the words to her picture. She so loved the Robert Redford movie, THE GREAT GATSBY, and watching him and Mia Farrow dance to this rendition.
She always wanted to dance in a ruffled gown, with a man in a tux. I believe she and my Dad are dancing among the stars now. AMEN!

Discovered | Reviewer: Marilyn | 2/10/09
I discovered this song by watching the last episode of Cheers featuring Shelly Long. She and Ted Danson dance to this as an old couple as the scene fades out. I never get through watching it without tearing up.

Brava to Bravogirl05 | Reviewer: Mary | 10/24/08
This is the perfect song. I have listened to it sung by many famous artists--Judy Garland forgot the second line of the chorus and made up her own (a little lame), Johnny Mathis wrang every drop of pathos he could get out of the song, and Frank was backed by a full orchestra. The most perfect singer of this song, I think, is one I found on the internet: She has the appellation Bravogirl05, her name is Kristi, and she has the pure, sweet, clear voice that fits this wonderful song so perfectly. It was backed by only a simple keyboard rendition. I would give anything for her recording of "What'll I Do".

I can't believe I've found the words to this beautiful, haunting old song that my grandmother use to sing to me in the l940s. I've loved it forever and have always wished I knew all the lyrics. I recently got a computer and thought to look for it. I had a good cry, but I thank you for restoring a lovely memory from my childhood.

My favorite | Reviewer: Anna | 8/2/08
Out of all the old, wonderful songs that I perform, this has to be my favorite. I end my last set with 'What'll I Do' and it chokes me up every time. With the simple, yet meaningful lyrics and the beautiful, haunting melody . . .
And I have to give Linda Ronstadt credit for introducing me to so many classics with her collaborations with Nelson Riddle when I was in my late teens. 'What'll I Do' was one of them.

Bea Arthur sings what'll i do at the rusty anchor bar | Reviewer: teresa | 6/21/08
on the golden girls show journey to the center of attention, blanche and dorothy go to the local bar called the rusty anchor. blanche is the center of attention with all the men in the bar and dorothy is alone at a table near the piano player and he is tickling the ivories and she starts humming and then she starts singing what'll i do. i had never ever heard that song and i cried. it is on right now. my husband left me and my children after i suffered a stroke and coma and when i heard that song it really hit home. thank you dorothy. sincerely,
teresa

Thanks for the memory ...... | Reviewer: Barbara | 5/22/08
Thank you - I'm always trying to remember the words of "old" songs to sing to my granddaugher - she seems to love them so. "What'll I do" just came to mind last evening and although I couldn't remember all the words, when I started singing it to her she said "grandma you have to have your arms around me when you sing that song" - I had no idea of it's background til now - "out of the mouths of babes"! Thanks for making new memories
for both of us.

Who else should record this song | Reviewer: Margaret Offley | 3/28/08
Several years ago my husband and I watched a TV program on which Bernadette Peters sang this song; it was outstanding and so impressive, that it brought tears to my eyes. It does not appear that she ever recorded it, or included it in her other recordings to the best of my knowledge. She was guest host today on Regis and Kelly, and when I saw her, it reminded me of that moment long ago. I certainly wish she would record an album of Irving Berlin titles to include "What'll I Do"? Miss Peters is surely a most talented performer. Her rendition of this song was unforgettable.

A real heartbreaker. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/4/07
I am now listening to this song sung by Johnny Mathis for about the 15th time. I haven't heard it for over 50 years. Could never find it again. My daughter just gifted this to me on I Tunes. Many years ago I played this very same version over and over again for an old boyfriend. Now that I know the sad background for this most beautiful of songs, I'm in tears all over again. . Johnny Mathis's voice is just mesmerizing. Sadly they don't make them like this anymore.
