Walking In Memphis
Put on my blue suede shoes
And I boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain
W.C. Handy -- won't you look down over me
'Cause, I've got a first class ticket
And I'm as blue as a boy can be
Chorus:
I'm walking in Memphis
Walking with my feet ten feet off of the Beale
Walking in Memphis
Do I really feel the way I feel
Saw the ghost of Elvis
Down on Union Avenue
Followed him up to the gates of Graceland
And watched him walk right through
Now security they did not see him
They just hovered around his tomb
There's a pretty little thing
Waiting on the King
Down in the Jungle Room
(Chorus)
They've got catfish on the table
They've got gospel in the air
And Reverend Green be glad to see you
When you haven't got a prayer
You got a prayer in Memphis
Now Muriel plays the piano
Every Friday at the Hollywood
And they brought me down to see her
And they asked me if I would --
Do a little number
And I sang with all my might
She said, "Tell me are you a Christian?"
And I said, "Ma'am I am tonight"
[Repeat Chorus 3x]

random notes on Memphis to which I've never been. | Reviewer: a j the furmanator | 3/26/10
This song by Marc Cohn resonates brilliantly to those of us who find themselves on the shoreline of sunny afternoons, a shot or two it's up to you, we feel like we're on Beal, when will the King reveal...a dust particle in the wind, comes up from Memphis to the Southern land of Wisconsin, Spring in the air, not to despair, we're walking in Memphis not a care, on a softly brushing whim.
love this song!!!!! :P | Reviewer: pickles | 10/19/09
I first heard this song when I was really little and I was in the car; ever since the first time i heard it the song has been my favorite song of my life! it was the kind of song that you heard it for the first time ever and it just stuck with me. I never knew the name of it until like 3 or 4 days ago because I had it on my itunes and it got deleted! :( then i was with my dad and the song was playing on the radio and I couldn't help but sing along with all of the words! now I have it on my ipod and listen to it at LEAST like about 10 times a day!
Touching song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/11/07
I have never been able to figure out why, but every time I hear the end of this song - which is a repeat of the first lines - I start to choke up and have to hold back tears. I like the rest of the song, though I don't find it particularly great - but for some unknown psychological reason those last lines really have an effect on me.

Beale??? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/20/06
Just for those wondering like I was, I found the def. of beale:
Beale Street is a street in Memphis, Tennessee and a significant location in black history and the history of the blues. Today, the blues clubs and restaurants that line Beale Street are major tourist attractions in Memphis. Festivals and outdoor concerts periodically bring large crowds to the street and its surrounding areas.
Hopefully now you know what you are actually singing!! haha
AWESOME SONG!!! | Reviewer: Meg | 12/21/05
This song is an awesome song. It's one of my all time fave's and I just can't get enough of this song! LOL But i've always wondered, what's a beale? Is it some part of a dock on a lake or a beach or something?
