By Michael Nesmith
You told me you'd always stay, you told me!
You told me you'd never stray, you told me!
All these things you said you said sincerely.
Still I am leaving you in spite of what you told me.
I've heard things that did not match what you told me.
And of your love that would not last as you told me.
Forwarned is forearmed, it hurts, I'm leaving.
I may be wrong I can't love what I'm just hearing.
Times have made me shy
Of all the things you're saying
Time have made me shy
Of girls and all the games they are playing.
Someday I may see the truth of what you told me.
I may find I left too soon and that you told me.
Only things that you were honestly feeling.
I must have more to love than what you told me.
Yes, I must have more to love than what you told me.
Yes, I must have more to love than what you told me.

Playing their own instruments! | Reviewer: Ringo Dolenz | 2/11/11
This is great little Nesmith number opens the Monkees third - and possibly their best - album, "Headquarters", the one on which, with a few exceptions, Mike, Davy, Micky and Pete played all their own instruments!
Melodically, the opening track's verses remind me of those of the Beatles' "Dr Robert", from the previous year's "Revolver" (1966) album. "You Told Me" opens with the Monkees goofing around as they count in, possibly parodying a similar introduction to "Taxman", the opening track on "Revolver" (McCartney did the same for "I Saw Her Standing There", the opening track on The Beatles' debut (British) LP, "Please Please Me" (1963)).
Several Beatles-references pop up on "Headquarters", culminating in "Randy Scouse Git" (aka "Alternate Title"). Perhaps the Monkees were simply having fun with their having been labelled as the pre-fab four, as they enjoyed their new-found freedom following the Nesmith-led rebellion against the studio bosses. "Headquarters" is certainly a satisfying album, but the Monkees would wait another 30 years to record an album in this fashion again ("Justus").
"You Told Me" was one of several tracks from "Headquarters" to make it onto the TV series; I seem to recall a sequence featuring Davy (in a suit!) and that week's love interest running in slow motion along a sunny beach, with this song playing in the background. (Side Two's "For Pete's Sake" would also become the TV series' closing theme.)
In conclusion, "You Told Me" is a great opener to, arguably, the Monkee's greatest album, the one on which they proved they could be a REAL band if they wanted to!
