"To seek the sacred river Alph
To walk the caves of ice
To break my fast on honeydew
And drink the milk of Paradise..."
I had heard the whispered tales of immortality
The deepest mystery
From an ancient book I took a clue
I scaled the frozen mountain tops of eastern lands unknown
Time and Man alone
Searching for the lost Xanadu
Xanadu...
To stand within the Pleasure Dome
Decreed by Kubla Khan
To taste anew the fruits of life
The last immortal man
To find the sacred river Alph
To walk the caves of ice
Oh, I will dine on honeydew
And drink the milk of Paradise
A thousand years have come and gone but time has passed me by
Stars stopped in the sky
Frozen in an everlasting view
Waiting for the world to end, weary of the night
Praying for the light
Prison of the lost
Xanadu
Xanadu...
Held within the Pleasure Dome
Decreed by Kubla Khan
To taste my bitter triumph
As a mad immortal man
Nevermore shall I return
Escape these caves of ice
For I have dined on honeydew
And drunk the milk of Paradise
Or is it Paradise??

Opium Dream | Reviewer: Richard | 8/15/11
This song is Rush's interpretation of Samel Taylor Coleridge's poem Kubla Khan. The River Alph is a river in Antarctica (hence the frozen caves of ice) that got it's name from the poem. I beleive the reference to the mad immortal man was because the poem was written after he experienced an opium influenced dream.

Precision. Masterful musicianship. So hard, yet progressively intriguing to a 17 year old whose musical tastes were still formative. The venue...well you just have to experience it for yourselves. Perfect summer night. 1/2 oz of fine FINE weed...I think the weed was finer than the girl I had on my arm :) that night. Without question (speaking 33 years later), singularly the greatest concert I've ever been to. The night, the place, the band...unbelievably powerful and pure magic.
Rush can sure tell a story...and offer a life lesson! | Reviewer: Kirk Bradford Myers | 6/11/10
One of the best stories Rush has ever told in a song...it is highly open to personal interpretation. There is a lesson to be learned in this one, and that is to find happiness and pleasure in that which you are already surrounded by instead of never being satisfied and constantly looking outward. In this case, the "paradise" of immortality which the seeker found turned out to be their prison, a miserable lonely existence from which they could never escape. In an indirect way, it could even elude to Rush's own dissatisfaction with their own newfound fame and their desire to return to the privacy and solace which they had once known. (Of course, if I personally knew that I stood to make twelve gazillion dollars off this year's concert tour just for going out there and doing something I immensely enjoy for three hours I think I'd put up with having running chainsaws chucked at me!) Anyway, great song and a great story and lesson behind it.

I had been swimming at the place where the creek meets the lake. Great, great sunny perfect day. We had just came back to... relax for a second before going back out and someone said " Have you heard this?" I hadn't. When I think of that day now, I don't think of how perfect the weather, the company, the lake, creek or day was. I think of that song. It really was the icing on the cake that was that day.
This song just plain has it all, profound lyrics (that stay true to the epic) soaring, great leads, vocal and guitar. The drums beat like a heart.
Rush has done a lot of really stellar stuff, but this is by far and away their best. I am always surprised to hear them play Rush's songs like " today's Tom Sawyer" (sadly, I don't even remember the name) over and over when they have songs like Xanadu which is hardly EVER played.
