The Smiling Face Blues

I always see my baby’s face, smiling at me, late at night
I see her shining face so clear, like in the brightest light
She left me a week ago, ‘cause I didn’t treat her right
But I still see her smiling face, smiling at me, late at night

Be out with my friends and drink, and not go home till dawn
When she called me on the phone, I have the barkeep say I’d gone
When I’d finally wander home, Have to sleep out on the lawn
I had sacrificed my only queen, to hang out with the pawns

I should have mended all my ways, begged her please to stay
A man should never take for granted, what could just walk away
They say mans’ best friends a dog, and even he won’t play
If you don’t give, the dog bone, and something nice to say

She called me from Atlanta, and asked, Me babe ‘Are you alright?’
Told her I’d stopped drinking, Love her smiling face at night
She was always smiling, even when we’d have a fight
I told her that I realized, I was wrong and She was right

Just before she hung up the phone and we said our good-byes
She said that if I really meant it, that she would come back home tonight
Her smiling face would comfort me, but I should have known
It’s never as good as the real thing, when you’re lying there alone

Nice to see your baby’s face Smiling at you late at night
But you better not go drinkin’ cause you might get in a fight
So if you want to keep the real thing and you really like to play
You better give the dog a bone and some’n nice to say
