Green Day

Wak Me Up When September Ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends

Like my fathers come to pass
Seven years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends

Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are

As my memory rests
But never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends

Ring out the bells again
Like we did when spring began
Wake me up when September ends

Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are

As my memory rests
But never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends

Like my fathers come to pass
Twenty years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends
Wake me up when September ends
Wake me up when September ends

Fun Facts | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/6/10

actally, Billy Joe wrote this song for his father. When he was a small boy, his father died in September hence Wake Me Up When September Ends. Also another clue is the lines

Like my fathers come to pass
Twenty years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends

So by the time wrote this song, 20 years has already passed since his father passed away.

This song crucifies me. | Reviewer: Daniel Jackson | 3/4/09

I first heard this song the night before my son went to Iraq with his unit (3rd Parachure Regiment, british army). I was sitting in a friends house when the video for this track was played on TV as a video exclusive. I managed to get about half way through it and I had to ask my friend (whose house it was) to turn it off. It had me in tears with just the timbre, and key of the song. The meaning of the lyrics, although it was the first time I heard it, REALLY hit home.

A year later, I lost my son in Afghanistan.

This song has a DEEPLY personal meaning for me. I CANNOT listen to it in the presence of anyone else. I love the sentiment, and the message.

My son was killed in the summer of 2006, and he was 4 days short of his 20th birthday.

When I listen to it alone, it allows me the release of private grief. I dont know which one of them came up with the song, but I know out of all the music I have ever heard.... this song triggers a release in me whereby I can grieve in a way I cant do any other way.

I have never heard a piece of music,or read a piece of literature that has effected me so deeply.

Summer (read first post) was closer to the meaning of the song. Billy Joe Armstrong wrote this song based on his father's death when he (Billy Joe) was ten years old. The song is saying just as summer said he wishes he could "sleep through september" to avoid dealing with the pain and memories.

The true meaning of the Song | Reviewer: Casi South | 11/6/07

Wake me up when September ends is about the war that is going on It's about how the war separates families and loved ones from the world we know It's like you're in a nightmare you can't escape You try to escape though it's impossible That's why you are trying to get someone to wake you up.Wake me up from this nightmare Wake me up when this war is ended Wake me up when September ends.

I really like this song. Everytime I hear it or the title, it reminds me of the how my grandmother passed away in September three and a half years ago. Sometimes I just wish I could sleep through September and never have to go through the pain of knowing that the whatever year mark is just around the corner.
