I'm glad to see the lyrics. I downloaded the Drakensberg Boys' Choir singing it and, because they are a South African choir, I sort of guessed it had to do with apartheid and the fact that it's over but needs to be kept chained.
The Drakies are one of the best choirs in the world. If you haven't heard them, have a look on YouTube. Their African music is simply stunning.

i'm a huge josh groban fan, and i have to admit i listen to this song on repeat all the time.
i always thought the lyrics to this song had something to do with the hiding of a secret and the sadness of the harboring of it. the sadness and the pain.
i never knew it had anything to do with the apartheid, but now that i know, i have to say that it makes a lot more sense.

This is a good enough version- I have never listened to Mr. Groban before, but he does have quite a bit of skill. However I much prefer the version of "Weeping" done by the South African dance music group, Qkumba Zoo. They did this song on their debut album way back in 1996, and I think it is a lot more powerful than Groban's version.

I sang this song on a music course i went on and our version was arranged by a man called dan swana who sang this infront of nelson mandela because it is about the trouble in south africa and when it was written it was kept underground incase the government found it
but it is the best gospel song ever

This song is deep. I read an earlier review stating that it is about political and physical oppression; however, my own sentiments had always turned the meaning toward something kept secret. I had always thought that the man who had built the wall had a deep secret that he wished none to know, and so he caged it up in himself, for he was afraid that one day it would come roaring out into the open. Instead, the secret within him mourned because of the trouble of hiding it, and because things most desperately hidden most desperately seek to get out. Either way, it's one of the best songs I've ever heard.

I loved this song -as sad as it is- from the first moment I heard it and knew right away it must have been written as living lesson to anyone alone in the darkness of oppression. It touched me deeply...made me feel, made me cry, but gave me hope. Ladysmith Black Mambazo is outstanding with their deep earthy sounds-took me straight to Africa, and Josh Groban's voice from Heaven is as powerful and moving as ever! Now this is music from the heart!!!

This song was written, recorded and released by South African (Cape Town) band Bright Blue in 1988. It is an anti-apartheid song. The man (Apartheid-time South African government) lived in fear (of the Black freedom struggle). They built a wall (hiding the truth of the oppression from the world and its own citizens) and kept telling everyone that all is ok. Check out www.weeping.info. I sincerely hope Groban that Groban understood the history and meaning behind this beautiful, yet sad, poetry.
