This is for targeted to those claiming that someone analyzing a song is nit picking it and critisizing it.
I used to dance to this song, and I still do! I love this song...However, I am currently taking a gay and lesbian history class and this song was definatly written about the reputations YMCA's had for the gay culture. Gays would gather there. There is nothing wrong with that, or about a song being written about that. But do not try to shelter yourself with the idea that a song is just a song and doesn't mean anything. A song can be powerful, and to someone could mean the world. Just because you think that this song doesnt matter or that someone is just reading between the lines too much, doesnt mean it wasnt a pioneering song in the gay community. The bottom line is to not let yourself tolorate ignorance.

I can see the YMCA from where I work and I decided to look the lyrics up to get an idea of what the writer was trying to say. I see a lot of gay references here, but the song really suggests nothing about sexual preference. I'm indifferent to disco, I thought the 70s were tacky in every aspect, but disco and glam looked fun! I'm 40 so I missed the scene, but dancing to ebm in the goth bars now isn't much different I suppose. I'm a straight male, married with children and all I have to say is the gay people I know are fun, caring, and intelligent so you're missing out IMO. Anyway, nit a big fan of the song, but I think the message was good. If you're homeless, having a hard time, or need a place to escape the message got out that you have a place to go to get back on your feet or to play some ball away from the gangs and drugs. What a positive message! Just my two cents.

Rather, Willis said he wrote YMCA as a reflection of young urban black youth's fun at the YMCA such as basketball and swimming, etc. That said, Willis has also acknowledged his knack for double entendre writings.

The song is what it is, and like many others, can be taken in a variety of ways. I think the group was probably all looking to cash in on a few bucks to take a chance being suggestive. The VP put out a lot of songs with completely stupid lyrics and most of them sounded the same. Yet they are all still fun to dance to if you aren't in your corner trying to decide if it's a gay song or just hating everyone who does. I don't want to be around either of you losers.
