Y.M.C.A.

Young man, there's no need to feel down.
I said, young man, pick yourself off the ground.
I said, young man, 'cause you're in a new town
There's no need to be unhappy.

Young man, there's a place you can go.
I said, young man, when you're short on your dough.
You can stay there, and I'm sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time.

It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A.
It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A.

They have everything that you need to enjoy,
You can hang out with all the boys ...

It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A.
It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A.

You can get yourself clean, you can have a good meal
You can do whatever you feel ...

Young man, are you listening to me?
I said, young man, what do you want to be?
I said, young man, you can make real your dreams.
But you've got to know this one thing!

No man does it all by himself.
I said, young man, put your pride on the shelf,
And just go there, to the Y.M.C.A.
I'm sure they can help you today.

You can get yourself clean, you can have a good meal,
You can do whatever you feel ...

Young man, I was once in your shoes.
I said, I was down and out with the blues.
I felt no man cared if I were alive.
I felt the whole world was so jive ...

That's when someone came up to me,
And said, young man, take a walk up the street.
It's a place there called the Y.M.C.A.
They can start you back on your way.

It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A.
It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A.

They have everything that you need to enjoy,
You can hang out with all the boys ...

YMCA
It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A
Young man, young man there's no need to feel down
Young man, young man pick yourself off the ground

Y-M-C-A
then just go to the Y-M-C-A
young man, young man I was once in your shoes
young man, young man I said, I was down and out with the blues.

y'all need to give it a rest... and fuckabuncha gay bashers, anyhow! | Reviewer: Mary | 9/5/11

Why do people twist up a great dance tune to complain? (which is just mostly giving voice their homophobic fears?)
#1 nobody gives a shit about your scars, especially the ones that come from emotionalyl crippled rednecks. And, therefore y'all need to:

#2 GET OVER IT... ITS JUST A SONG, AND ITS A TERRIFIC DANCING TUNE! - IF Y'ALL HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE ARTISTS, SEE A SHRINK OR SOMETHING - OR JUST MAN UP AND ACCEPT THAT PEOPLE ARE DIFFERENT...I

There is nothing Wrong Here | Reviewer: Sasha James | 2/4/11

This is for targeted to those claiming that someone analyzing a song is nit picking it and critisizing it.

I used to dance to this song, and I still do! I love this song...However, I am currently taking a gay and lesbian history class and this song was definatly written about the reputations YMCA's had for the gay culture. Gays would gather there. There is nothing wrong with that, or about a song being written about that. But do not try to shelter yourself with the idea that a song is just a song and doesn't mean anything. A song can be powerful, and to someone could mean the world. Just because you think that this song doesnt matter or that someone is just reading between the lines too much, doesnt mean it wasnt a pioneering song in the gay community. The bottom line is to not let yourself tolorate ignorance.

Gay | Reviewer: Not A YMCA Fan | 7/29/10

This is about getting young boys to go to the Y. My wife worked at the YMCA for a while and they were always busting gay men in the showers. Like once a month. They'd have to call the police to get them out of there.

Hmm | Reviewer: Mohawke | 2/24/10

I can see the YMCA from where I work and I decided to look the lyrics up to get an idea of what the writer was trying to say. I see a lot of gay references here, but the song really suggests nothing about sexual preference. I'm indifferent to disco, I thought the 70s were tacky in every aspect, but disco and glam looked fun! I'm 40 so I missed the scene, but dancing to ebm in the goth bars now isn't much different I suppose. I'm a straight male, married with children and all I have to say is the gay people I know are fun, caring, and intelligent so you're missing out IMO. Anyway, nit a big fan of the song, but I think the message was good. If you're homeless, having a hard time, or need a place to escape the message got out that you have a place to go to get back on your feet or to play some ball away from the gangs and drugs. What a positive message! Just my two cents.

Come on... | Reviewer: Louise Attaque | 2/22/10

Guys, give me a break... It's just a song. As many friends in here said, let's just listen to it, dance and have a little fun!

Trying to find something wrong in every single thing that exists in this world is so sad... Everything would be a lot different if we worked hard to do exactly the opposite.

Anyway... greetings.

TO CLARIFY | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/14/09

In the gay culture from which the group sprang, the song was implicitly understood as celebrating the YMCA's reputation as a popular cruising and hookup spot, particularly for the younger gay men to whom it was addressed.[1] However, Victor Willis, Village People lead singer of the song, as well as writer of the lyrics, has clarified the record and insist that he did not write YMCA as a gay anthem (Willis was one of the few members of the group that was straight). Rather, Willis said he wrote YMCA as a reflection of young urban black youth's fun at the YMCA such as basketball and swimming, etc. That said, Willis has also acknowledged his knack for double entendre writings.

the gay bashers make me laugh.. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/29/09

I am straight and form what I raed there are a few homophibics out here. Anyway, you can say
whatever but the truth is that the disco era was
great. To bad you couldn't enjoyed it because you couldn't dance, was to old or to young.
Maybe you are way to macho and you are a hard
core man(I am scared). All that tells me is that you are afraid you might like it. Don't be afraid you know who you are.

Hilarious | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/14/09

LMAO The last guy out hate-mongering against people who disagree with him, calling vile names, and accusing him of being "a pansy because he wouldn't sign his real name" - written by a guy who also uses a screen name. Look around pal - nobody uses their real name including you. And it would mean nothing to you if they did. People that use such silliness usually don't have much to say anyway.

People are entitled to their opinions including you and the other guy. If your mission is to attack others, call them names, and envision yourself as the word police, then doesn't that make you what they are - plus a hypocrite?

The song is what it is, and like many others, can be taken in a variety of ways. I think the group was probably all looking to cash in on a few bucks to take a chance being suggestive. The VP put out a lot of songs with completely stupid lyrics and most of them sounded the same. Yet they are all still fun to dance to if you aren't in your corner trying to decide if it's a gay song or just hating everyone who does. I don't want to be around either of you losers.

So whatever your opinion or whether you are just out hating other people with opinions, give it a rest and go dance a bit. Honestly, nobody really cares what you think, and you think way too much of yourself if you are out there blasting others for their opinions.
