Dánska basgitaristka Ida Kristine Nielsen, známa predovšetkým z pôsobenia v Princeových kapelách 3rdeyegirl a The New Power Generation, vystúpi vo štvrtok (1.11.) v pražskom podniku Jazz Dock. V exkluzívnom rozhovore sa dozviete, čo všetko sa od Princea naučila, ale aj ako sa dostala k basgitare, kto sú jej vzory a čo môžu fanúšikovia očakávať od jej pražskej šou.
Vo svete plnom hudobných nástrojov si sa rozhodla práve pre basgitaru. Prečo?
Stalo sa to náhodou. Vyrastala som na dánskom vidieku a navštevovala maličkú školu s veľmi oduševneným učiteľom hudby. Hrala som na piáno a spievala v zbore. Jedného dňa získal pre školu bicie a basu, čo bola veľká vec, a každý, kto chcel, si mohol nástroje vyskúšať. Vlastne sa mi vtedy páčili viac bicie, ale jedno dievča zo zboru sa ma opýtalo, či nechcem ísť hrať do jej kapely na basu. V tom čase som vedela akurát názvy strún a zahrať tri noty. Potom som ale niekde videla koncert týpkov, čo hrali funk, a bolo rozhodnuté. Basgitarista hral fantasticky a ja som utekala domov a skúšala ho napodobňovať.
Vnímaš každý nástroj ako jedinečný a špeciálny, alebo je to skôr pragmatické, v závislosti od daného žánru?
Cítim to tak, že skrátka hrám rozdielnu muziku s rozdielnymi nástrojmi. Napríklad, keď hrám na basu, pracujem s groovmi, keď na piáno, snažím sa o pekné melódie a o viac akordov. Samozrejme, všetko záleží od mojej nálady.
Máš obľúbených hráčov na basu?
Je ich hrozne veľa... Stále sa pritom bojím, že niekoho zabudnem (smiech). V posledných rokoch však najviac počúvam a sú mi vzorom: Prince, Larry Graham, Marcus Miller, Bootsy Collins, Victor Wooten, Pino Paladino, Jaco Pastorius, Meshgell Ndegeocello, Rocco Prestia, Steve Bailey a Flea. Samozrejme stále objavujem nových výborných muzikantov, je ich hrozne veľa.
Keď sa bavíme o basákoch, ktorými sú väčšinou muži, v poslednej dobe som zachytil viacero iniciatív kritizujúcich dominantné postavenie mužov v hudbe. Aký je tvoj názor?
Myslím, že táto záležitosť sa týka celého hudobného biznisu, ale viem, že existuje ohromné množstvo úžasných muzikantiek, ktoré si idú svoje. Myslím, že je to len otázka času, kým každý pochopí, že ženy môžu hrať rovnako dobre ako muži.
Hrala si v niekoľkých ženských kapelách. Je na čisto dámskych kapelách niečo špecifické?
Vlastne som nikdy nehrala v čisto ženskej kapele. 3rdeyegirl nikdy nehrali bez Princea, on bol mužskou časťou kapely. Som radšej, keď sú kapely zmiešané. Celku to dáva pekný balans.
Ktoré faktory sú u teba pri skladaní piesní kľúčové? Čo je pre teba dôležitejšie, hudba alebo texty?
Mám tendenciu najprv urobiť hudbu, až potom text. Hudba ku mne prichádza s extrémnou ľahkosťou. V podstate zakaždým, keď si sadnem k nástroju, urobím niečo nové... Len by som asi mala rozmýšľať viac nad tým textom. V 9 z 10 prípadov mám hudbu hotovú predtým, než vôbec začnem písať text.
Aké je to hrať vo viacerých kapelách?
Práve teraz hrám iba s jednou kapelou, ktorá je moja vlastná. Umožňuje mi to sústrediť sa na moju hudbu na sto percent. Keď som hrala s Princeom, bola som tiež iba v jednej kapele, čo je pochopiteľné. Musela som byť na príjme 24/7. Myslím si ale, že keď niekto chce byť dobrým muzikantom, je dôležité hrať s rôznymi ľuďmi a rôzne štýly. Je to prirodzená cesta k tomu posilniť svoje "muzikantstvo" a všestrannosť.
Na Slovensku a v Česku často rozoberáme, čo je pre kapely lepšie. Spievať v rodnom jazyku alebo v angličtine?
Myslím si, že toto úplne záleží na človeku, ktorý píše texty. Keď má naozaj poetickú dušu a veľa na srdci, šanca, že budú texty v rodnom jazyku naozaj fungovať, sú veľké. To ale môže samozrejme komplikovať vývoz tejto hudby za hranice krajiny. Napríklad ja osobne si nie som istá, či by som bola na tomto svetovom turné, keby boli všetky moje skladby v dánčine.
Vnímaš rozdiel medzi európskou a americkou produkciou? Ak áno, v čom vidíš najväčší rozdiel?
Nuž, neubránim sa pocitu, že mainstreamová hudba je všade rovnaká. Rozdiely prichádzajú vtedy, keď sa muzikanti snažia ísť aspoň trochu do hĺbky. Osobne mám rozdiely veľmi rada, napríklad keď cestujem po rôznych krajinách a jazyk, architektúra, jedlo.. všetko je rozdielne.
Toto nebude tvoja prvá návšteva Prahy. Páči sa ti mesto?
Milujem Prahu. Je to prekrásne miesto s fascinujúcou históriou a architektúrou. Naposledy som dostala možnosť prejsť sa po meste so sprievodcom a bolo to naozaj super. Pevne verím, že budeme mať trochu času tentokrát si mesto obzrieť ešte dôkladnejšie.
Čo môžu návštevníci pražskej šou očakávať?
Prinesieme naozaj energickú funkovú šou zahŕňajúcu výrazné groovy, soulové melódie a veľa, veľa basy... Máme malé prekvapenia aj pre Princeových fanúšikov. Z osobných dôvodov nikdy nehrám kompletné Princeové skladby, ale mám niekoľko jemnulinkých náhrad... Princeoví fanúšikovia ich určite rozoznajú.
Máš nejaké obľúbené české alebo slovenské kapely?
Absolútne áno, úplne najviac Doctor Victor. Je to cool kapela. Poznám ich síce asi iba rok, ale zbožňujem ich. Hudba s príchuťou Jimiho Hendrixa, The Beatles aj Led Zeppelin, skrátka poctivá rocková vec so skvelými melódiami a groovom. Sú úžasní.
Ako vnímaš Princea po nejakom čase, čo odišiel do rockového neba.
Vnímam ho tak, ako som ho vždy vnímala. Bol to génius na všetkých hudobných leveloch. V produkcii, aranžmánoch, komponovaní, vystupovaní, a vyznal sa tiež v biznise. Budem navždy vďačná, že som dostala možnosť pozorovať "z prvej rady" ako pracoval. Naučila som sa od neho neuveriteľne veľa o hraní, aranžovaní aj produkovaní. Navždy sa budem ponárať do tohto "bazéna" naplneného jeho vedomosťami a schopnosťami. Uplatňujem ich v štúdiu, ale hlavne na pódiu počas vystúpení.
Dá sa tvoj vzťah s ním nejako stručne vystihnúť?
To je nemožné ;)

Pôvodná anglická verzia rozhovoru / Original English version of the interview
Among all musical instruments, you chose bass as your dominant one. Why so?
It all happened by a coincidence. I grew up in the countryside in Denmark and went to a small school with a very engaged music teacher. I was playing piano and singing in a choir. One day the school got a drum kit and a bass guitar. Everybody who wanted to try could do that. I actually liked the drums more, but one day one of the girls from the choir asked me if I wanted to play bass with a band she was in. I thought why not and went for it. I only knew the names of the strings + 3 notes. Then I saw a concert with a band of some young guys playing funk and the bass player was amazing!! I was completely floored and went home and tried to do the same. That's how it started.
Do you think each instrument has it's own essence or is it a more pragmatic selection, which depends, for example, on specific genre?
I feel like I play and write different music with different instruments. For example, if I play bass or guitar I mostly work with grooves and when I play piano I tend to do more pretty melodies with more chords. But ultimately it all depends on my mood too.
What about your biggest bass player influences?
There are SO many!! I am always scared to forget people but here are some of the players I listened to the most over the years (in random order): Prince, Larry Graham, Marcus Miller, Bootsy Collins, Victor Wooten, Pino Paladino, Jaco Pastorious, Meshell Ndegeocello, Rocco Prestia, Steve Bailey, Flea. I keep discovering great players as well. There are so many out there.
Talking about bass players (which are mostly men), recently I heard about few initiatives which criticize dominant position of men in music. What do you think about these opinions?
I think the whole music business has an issue with that. When that is said - I know that there are lots of fantastic female musicians (not only bass players) who are doing their thing. I think it is a matter of time before everybody discovers that girls also can play as well as men.
You have played in several female bands. Is there something specific about "all female" music?
I never actually played in an all female band. 3rdeyegirl never played without Prince so he was the male part of the band. I personally like when the bands are mixed - it gives a nice balance.
What are most important factors in your songwriting? What is more important to you, lyrics or music?
I always tend to make all the music before I put the lyrics. The music comes very easy to me - every time I sit down with an instrument I write something new. I have to think more about the lyrics. 9 out of 10 times I have the whole track done before I start writing the lyrics.
What is the reason for you to play in more music groups?
Right now I only play with one group, which is my own. That allows me to focus a 100% on my music. When I played with Prince I only played in his bands too (when you play with Prince it is not possible to play with anyone else because you are on call 24/7). With that said I think that if you want to be a good musician it is important that you try to play with different people and in different styles. That is how you strengthen your musicianship and versatility.
I had a few discussions with Slovak and Czech young bands, whether it is better to sing in native or in English language. Of course there are million positions in the debate, but what about your opinion?
I think it is all up to the writer of the lyrics. If you are very poetic and have a lot on your heart, chances are good that it will work better in your native language. But that might make it more difficult for you to get your music outside of the borders of your own country. For instance - I am not sure I would have been on this Europe tour if all my songs were in Danish...
Can you see the difference between European and American music production? If so, where is the biggest difference?
Well, the mainstream music is quite alike everywhere. But of course there are differences when you dig a little deeper. I personally like the differences - like when you travel to another country and the language and architecture is different. Embracing each other's differences is a strength to me.
This won't be your first visit to Prague. Do you like the city?
I love Prague! It is such a beautiful city with such interesting history and architecture. Last time I was there I got a chance to get a guided tour, which was super cool. I hope we will have a bit of time to check out the sights as well on this run.
Can we expect something special from Prague show?
We will deliver a high-energy funk show - packed with tight grooves, soulful melodies and lots of bass... And for the Prince fans we also have some small surprises. I don't play any full Prince songs for personal reasons. But I have a few references - they are very subtle, but the Prince fans will recognize.
Do you have some favorite Czech music acts?
Yes! Doctor Victor! Such a cool band. I have only known this band for less than a year, but I Love them. Their music has flavours of Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. Rock music with good melodies and a groove. Absolutely amazing!!
How do you perceive Prince after some time without him?
I perceive him like I always did. He was a genius. On all musical levels. Production, arrangement, composing, performance and business wise as well. And I feel so thankful that I had the opportunity to watch how he worked from first row - so to speak. I learned so much about both playing, arranging and producing and I keep diving into that pool of knowledge in my musical life - both for studio work but especially also for my live performances.
